As part of the self-sufficiency angle, cadets could apply for transport and food to go camping for the weekend after Saturday morning drill parade. This varied from sailing on Lake George, skiing at Mt Ginini, hiking in the mountains, to fishing at the Cotter or Brindabella.

The rations provided were never sufficient, so the rabbit population was targeted (as well as scavenging for potatoes, quinces and other edibles at the expense of the local farmers).

Smoking them out was a better idea than relying on dead-eye-dick Gordon Murphy, who insisted on shooting them through the eyes so you couldn't tell whether they had Myxo or not, and had to be discarded.

Fish, flesh and fowl were necessary adjuncts to the few tins of bully, beans, veg and peaches supplied by the College.
